Diet and Fitness: How to make the right choicesSubscribe

As many experts as there are in the world regarding fitness, they all agree on a few fundamental principles:

1. Fitness and health are not just about the absence of illness.

2. It depends not just on what you burn out but also on what you eat.

3. There are no tailormade cookie-cut solutions. Each individual has different dietary and exercise needs. Sure, there can be some generalizations but everyone forms their unique eating and exercise patterns over time.

4. If you think health is costly, try being unwell (sarcasm alert!).

The question, however, is how to make healthy eating choices.

How to decide what diet to pick? Here is what our experts have to say:

1. Avoid FAD diets – A well-balanced diet is not only about the right food combinations but also the right frequency and gaps. Crash diets, keto diets, intermittent fasting and other such dietary plans may have benefits to offer. However, one must remember that these are all relatively new methodologies and insufficient medical research exists around them. So, before you choose any diet plan, we strongly recommend you consult a trained nutritionist.

2. Have an eating routine and get off to a good start – One thing that most experts agree about is that eating a healthy breakfast regularly is essential. It not only prevents metabolism-related disorders but also fuels you through the day.

3. Include all essential components – Irrespective of what meal of the day it is, food and healthy eating are not about pumping yourself with carbs or protein shakes. It would help if you also had fibre, some fat and a balanced set of micronutrients. While some of your specific dietary needs might be supplemented, it’s best if procured from natural sources.

4. Balanced meals are easy to plan – Not all carbs are bad. Carbs are essential and complex carbohydrates are what you need to incorporate into your diet. Beans, fruits, vegetables and whole grains are your best choices. The same goes for fat. Natural sources of fats, like nuts, fish, etc., are the best. Nuts, seeds, berries and plant pigments in fruits and vegetables are all necessary for the body. Strictly avoid all artificial sweeteners, processed foods, fine flour, refined fats, artificial juices or aerated drinks.

5. Last but not least – Water and fluid intake are essential. 70% of the human body is water and it’s not something one can overlook. Dehydration doesn’t just impact your skin, eyes or other membranous organs in your body; it can also lead to insufficient detox, kidney stones and other such disorders. So, ensure that your water intake is sufficient and that you do not substitute water with coffee, bottled or aerated drinks, etc.

Remember one thing every health, fitness or nutrition expert agrees on – Balance.

Balance is the key!
