Moreover, Ayurveda is vast and Panchakarma acts like the heart of Ayurveda. For decades Ayurveda has rightly emphasised that health is not about getting diseases but is also about the deep-rooted normalcy of Dosha, Dathu, Agni and Malakriya.

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is a method of lubricating the body and cleansing it by releasing all the unwanted waste from the body. Panchakarma is a primary treatment geared to treat Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. Vata, Pitta and Kapha broadly represent the human body’s nervous, metabolic and nutritive systems. Keeping these three elements intact helps maintain the human body's overall health.

Let's understand what Panchkarma was named after. The name "Panchakarma" stands for "Five actions." It means that Panchakarma entails five activities based upon five distinctive activities that control the body: Purgation, Vomiting, Anuvaasan, Niruham and Nasyam.

What are the five techniques of Panchakarma?

As Panchakarma is a detoxification technique, it encompasses five activities that purify and rejuvenate your body.

Five techniques of Panchakarma are as follows -

1) Basti - Herbalized oil enemas -

In the Basti method, Herbalized enemas are given to the patient. This method is meant to flush out fat-soluble toxins from the body. As scary as it sounds, it is a gentle method to release toxins from the deeper tissues.

2) Nasya - Nasal Irrigation

The Nasya method is ideal for people suffering from chronic allergies or sinus problems. In this method, medicinal oils are applied in the nasal passage, which helps cure congestion and other nasal problems.

3) Vamana - Therapeutic vomiting

This therapeutic vomiting procedure enables a person to remove excess mucus from the body. Before conducting Vamana, the patient is asked to consume Kapha Aggravating foods the night prior, such as Basmati rice, Yoghurt and sweets. By releasing toxins via vomiting, Kapha and Pitta Doshas can be cured.

4) Virechana - Purgation

Virechana is meant to cleanse the Pitta from the body and purify the blood. It focuses on clearing the toxins accumulated in the liver and gallbladder. The varieties of herbs used in this procedure act as a laxative and decongestants that cleanse the colon, sweat glands, liver and stomach.

5) Raktamokshana - Bloodletting

Raktmokshana stands for - Rakta means blood and Mokshana means Liberation, meaning releasing impure blood from the body. This method uses surgical instruments with strategic incisions made in the prescribed areas. Besides this, another technique of Raktamokshana is by using leeches. This method benefits people suffering from eczema, inflammation or other skin disorders.
